• I think you need a smartphone to get the device registered and up and running. From then on out, it can be used as a standalone device. You will not receive any software updates, however, without a connected device tethered to it.

• It will work on it's own. The manual that comes with it is vague, just Google it and you will find Garmin's online manual that is much clearer.

• Using the charging cord, I believe you can synch it manually by hooking it up to a cpu, but I would strongly recommend using it with a smartphone.
