Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It can, via Bluetooth. I turn the Bluetooth off on my Garmin because otherwise it drains the battery on my phone quickly. I turn it on once a day or whenever, to sync, then I turn the Bluetooth back off.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No, however the Garmin vívosmart HR utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy which will allow you the vívosmart HR to receive text, call, email, calendar and social media alerts when paired with a compatible smartphone*. The vívosmart HR does have the ability to periodically synchronize it's data with the Garmin Connect Mobile app automatically, however you can manual sync it at any time. {CW} * http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7bbbfc9660-8f77-11e3-d5f4-000000000000%7d
