I wouldn't swim with it. Excess water could and probably would destroy the electronics in it. I does sync with your smart phone, and not only notifies your calls, but your texts as well. If you're looking for a tracker to swim with, I would recommend the jawbone UP.

This item is waterproof and can be used while swimming and it will sync with a smart phone.

Yes, the vívosmart HR has a water resistance rating of 5ATM.  You can read more about water ratings here: www.garmin.com/waterrating  It's important to note that although the vívosmart HR should be fine while swimming, it will not provide any detailed swim metrics for you.

The vívosmart will regularly sync with a paired, compatible smart phone (www.garmin.com/ble), and it will provide text, call, email, calendar, and social media alerts.  -JPK
