• Just one swipe from the watch face and you can easily see the step count.

• Yes it displays steps taken on the watch. It doesn't require phone to do that.

• There are many various optional watch faces you can download and install onto the watch, and most of those will show you the exact step count on the main screen without having to view any other screens. So - yes that's possible with just about any/all of the hundreds of optional watch faces.
