No it does not. You put in your height, weight, and steps per foot and the device calculates the distance for you. It has been pretty accurate.

No, it uses your steps. You can configure your steps (long/short) using a measuring tape and how many steps it takes to walk certain feet. When you put that in the Garmin Connect app it will be a little more accurate.

I believe it uses your step stride. You can manually enter in your stride distance or it will calculate it for you when you enter, height, weight, etc.

No, it does not have GPS. It uses a motion sensor to measure your steps. It's fairly accurate when I have used it over a known distance while walking. I can't comment on it's performance while running. Of course, it would not measure the same if you are biking, skateboarding, etc.

No. It uses your average stride length - which you have to imput - to calculate distance, so it is only a rough estimate.

Unfortunately, it does not functions with GPS, but what it is design to do is measure steps taken, calories burned and distance traveled and alerts you to extended periods of inactivity.
