QuestionHi, my cabinet shelf is 18 inches deep. The old GE microwave that was in this cabinet was 19 inches in depth and it aligned perfectly with the old trim kit. Would I be able to install this microwave in the shelf that is 18 inches deep? Thanks.

- Answer If the inside dimensions of your trim kit match the outside dimensions of the microwave, you should be fine. Are you worried about it pushing back in the cabinet over time? I wouldn't think that would be an issue. On the rare occasion that happened, you could re-position it. I had to do that with a prior replacement from time to time. You can always double check with GE by going to their website and using their real time chat feature. They can tell you the best replacement for what you had,

You will need to measure your older micro/oven combo to determine a replacement model. - Answer Hi Jtay- This is Sue at GE Appliances. We appreciate your consideration! Microwaves need adequate air clearance on each side, the rear and the top to function properly. This allows good circulation for the intake and discharge air vents. If placed in an appliance garage, we recommend 3" of clearance on both sides and the top and 1" clearance in the rear. The front edge of the microwave (measured at door) should sit at least 3" or more back on the counter or shelf to avoid accidental tipping. If located on the counter near a range, we recommend locating it at least 2 ft. away. Do not place near or over a heat source. Thanks for checking with us!

- Answer Hi Sid- This is Sue at GE Appliances. We are sorry to hear of this unfortunate experience and certainly appreciate your loyalty! A trim kit consists of the trim frame, as well as an upper, lower, and rear duct that attaches to and encases the microwave inside the cabinet cut-out. It is important to only use the trim kit designed for that model. PEB9159DJWW is compatible with Optional 27" Built-In Kit JX9152DJWW and Optional 30" Built-In Kit JX9153DJWW. The only difference between the 27" and 30" trim kit is the trim frame. If the microwave is installed over a 27" or 30" wall oven, be sure to match the trim kit width to the oven. This microwave is a countertop model that also has the option of being installed into a cabinet using a trim kit that provides the necessary air flow. Based on your description, it seems that you may be asking if you can place the microwave inside of a cabinet. Without a trim kit, these microwaves are intended for countertop use only and we strongly advise against placing them in tight or enclosed spaces. Doing so can block the vents from receiving and releasing proper air circulation which is a safety hazard.
