“During the wash cycle it is extremely noisy, is this normal? It’s a consistent back and forth noise. This is the first time we are using this and was not expecting it to be this loud.”

Mines isn't so I would say it's not normal

During the wash cycle, the agitator moves back and forth to provide excellent cleaning results. This sound is normal. Additional sounds are described on page 20 of the owner's manual.
