Yes it can be. I have it in my apartment window. I purchased it based on the size so I did not need to use the sides. You will need to build some type of upper support that acts like a window but that can be easy. I just cut some 1x boards i had and used tape between them to seal them. But a simple piece of something thick that can rest on the window frame will work. I installed some charcoal foam around the unit for draft support. Also using a piece of wood to keep the slide window against the unit is very helpful
