Hi Anna- Thanks for choosing GE! We are sorry to hear this, as it is not something we would expect to occur. Surface rust on the sidewalls of stainless steel baskets may be caused by particulates in the water. This type of surface rust can be cleaned off and in some cases prevented by following the cleaning instructions below: 1.Spray the basket with Windex. (Slight alkaline solution). 2.Clean the basket with Magic Eraser to remove all brown particulates. Magic eraser will not scratch the basket. 3.Wipe off the Windex. 4.Spray the basket with an oxalic acid based cleaner. (Bar Keepers Friend, available in most stores). 5.Wipe basket thoroughly. Wiping water spots off after each cycle with a wet cloth once the cleaning process above has been completed, can help with prevention. If surface rust is heavy, a filtration system may be needed to eliminate particulates in the water. If you need further assistance, a qualified service technician is required for an accurate diagnosis.
