After three years, the metal sheet covering the plastic started peeling off the knobs due to exposure to the heat from the oven. It started at the bottom of the knobs above the oven. We contacted GE directly and they sent us new knobs for free. These are cheap plastic and terrible for use in an appliance that uses high heat. The replacements are plastic as well, so we take the knobs off when using the oven, which is really inconvenient. We could not find any knobs that are all metal and don't want to ruin these because we may not get another set at no charge and they are not cheap to purchase. Really poor quality and we are very disappointed in GE, but I think all the manufactures are using plastic knobs now.

Why put non-heat resistant knobs on and heat a heat source? Shame on you GE! I thought that I was doing my due diligence in choosing new appliances for my kitchen, but it never occurred to me to ensure that the knobs were heatproof—that should have been a given. Now, the chrome paint has flaked off of all five of my cooktop knobs and the handle of my over-the-cooktop microwave. My 20 year old original GE kitchen appliances still looked almost like new, when I replaced them with these GE planned for immediate obsolescence appliances. By the way, my new GE refrigerator had to be replaced due to poor wiring and compressor issues, while still under warranty.
