“Why is there no fan to cool the compressor? Is there a thermostat to keep the compressor from over heating? Is there supposed to be a cover over the opening on the back of the freezer?”

I just received the part #24 called a shutter shipped to me from GE as I stated above. This shutter is much too large and does not fit on the back of this unit so I am retracting my comment since GEs representative must have been mistaken and sent part #24, the shutter for a different item, although the schematics clearly indicate a cover/ shutter for the back opening of this freezer.

The openining in the back that you refer to has 5 screw hole openings in the perimeter of the opening. Therefore I looked the parts list up on Partselect.com which pictures every part and item number of this freezers components, including “Part Number PS11701242” which is pictured as part “#24” and called a “Shutter.” And that’s exactly what it looks like, a small shutter allowing air flow, with 5 screws to attach to the back of this freezer over the open area. I contacted GE 5 days ago and they are shipping the shutter as shown in the schematic, free of charge, to my location, within 7-10 days. This shutter is necessary to keep any unwanted debris out of the unit, or in my case any visiting field mouse that may try to cozy up to my freezer in the garage this winter.

Also, rest assured the unit is equipped with a thermostat and you should not be concerned with overheating. All GE and Hotpoint chest and upright freezers have reciprocating compressors. Chest freezers have the condenser wrapped around the outside of the case. The outside white surface is actually acting as the condenser to remove heat from the inside. If the compressor is not running, the sides may feel cool at times - this is normal. Most chest freezers require 3" clearance on the back and sides. Keep in touch! SUE@GEA
