Hi waterwendy - Thanks for viewing GE Model AHP14LZ! The extra width is required for the accordion side panels. With accordion side panels, fits windows 26 1/8"- 37 3/4" wide. Case dimensions are 15 1/16"H x 20 3/16"W x 21 5/16"D. The air conditioner can be installed without the accordion panels. Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com. Sue
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I think they're accounting for the side curtains you attach on the unit. The curtains have holes for screws that will hold to the window for extra security. You could probably get away without attaching the curtains and only the bracket on top of the ac unit to keep it from falling out the window. You will need to use something to cover the open space if the curtains aren't attached.
