“Supposed to fit standard windows. There is plenty space in the window but the top mounting rail is not wide enough for the window sash to fit inside the rail. Would it be safe enough to secure the air conditioner by just using the side brackets only?”

The whle sash isn't meant to sit inside the rail you just need to have the verticle lip of the rail resting against the inside window and bring the bottom of the frame down ontop of the channel where the screws were that attached the rail to the case.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This is a heavy unit. It needs support from the top and bottom unless you are using complete ledge support. I would not rely on the weak plastic sliding sides to support this unit.
