The chassis measures almost 20.2" wide, and 26.125" is the minimum recommended opening (with curtains smooshed and FRAME intact. The maximum recommended opening is 37.75", with supplied curtains fully extended. I've installed window units in smaller than recommended openings by trimming the curtain FRAME to allow the curtains to fit a smaller opening. That's to say, the curtain FRAME was too big/wide and the curtain couldn't be smooshed. Measure twice, cut once.
