The mounting instructions call for a space at least 30 inches from stovetop to cabinet. The microwave itself is 16.5 inches, so you need at least 14.5 inches above stovetop. The distance from my countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinet is 36 inches. My stovetop grate is about 1 inch above the countertop. Installed I ended up with about 19 inches from top of stove to bottom of microwave. The bottom of the microwave sits about 2 inches above the bottom of the cabinets on each side. I've no problems using stovetop or getting good venting.
