“Can I operate my AC with the inside drain plug cap and filter removed without damaging the unit? I placed a big container under the unit to catch the water. I had to drain it every day and that's a real pain.”

There is an internal pump in it that is supposed to pump the water to the back of the unit there shouldnt be any accumulation in the front of the unit. Your pump is probably plugged up. You would need to get it serviced or figure out how to clean it.
