It functions like a cooler; it seems as those the walls of it are insulated like a cooler would be. Not really a refrigerator. It seems the temperature of the ice keeps it cool and the ice on the bottom drips through and the water is recirculated into new ice.

If the ice has detected a frozen auger and low ice production then the Defrosting Indicator will light up. The unit will run a rinse cycle to defrost the ice maker and then start making ice again. -Don@GEAppliances
