It can go somewhere else. It feeds water to the ice maker thru a small tube, so as long as that tube reaches and isn't kinked, and is flat or higher than ice maker, should work.

It should be level with the machine on the right or the left side and the water tube may not reach. It needs to be attached to the machine to prevent it from falling.
