Hello Tom - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and am happy to help you. Minimum clearance to combustible surfaces and for air openings are: 0" clearance on both sides and in the rear. Consideration must be given to provide adequate clearance for installation and service. The washer basket is plastic and the dryer drum is a painted steel. I hope this helps!
