• The UV light is secured and enclosed inside the unit. If you accidently open the back where the filter is, the UV light automatically turns off. Also, the outside shell of the unit is opaque, the UV rays are pretty well controlled. I've used this unit for 5 months now, and it works pretty well. no UV rays out, clean air all the time.

• The light is encased in the unit so you don't see the UV light. The light on the top rim is more for you to know you have the light engaged. You can turn it off as you wish. It cleans the air that comes into the unit and filters it back out. I have two and also have two dogs and two cats. I've had no issues with them.
