As long as its an approved device you can Sim swap but you will still incur international charges for any calls to the US

Sim or esims have a phone number attached so you'll either need to transfer your or your family members phone numbers to the Google Fi sim or esim to use for international travel or get new numbers for each sim/esim. DATA only sims are for use for DATA only they are not for use as a PHONE sim card which is used for Voice and DATA.
