Yes, works with Amazon, no, don't need monthly subscription services like Roku or stuff like that. It's simply a 'casting" device-as in anything you can view on your tablet/smartphone, you can send to your tv with this plugged in. (note: if you have a 'smart' tv, this capability is probably already built in, you just need to 'connect/pair" the devices. This isn't a direct connection TO service providers (such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon), nor can you record or anything else. it simply allows you to view content from your tablet or smartphone on a tv this is connected to. Think of it this way; it's really just a wireless way to turn your tv into a large monitor for your smart device (tablet/laptop/smartphone). Also, most major channels are now offering their channels independently (going with the public sick of rising cable costs) and stream a LOT of their shows directly.

Chromecast works with all the apps that have built support for it. This includes the majority of popular media apps on the phone (netflix,hulu,youtube,hbo go, etc.) and many more: https://www.google.com/intl/en_us/chromecast/apps/?utm_source=chromecast.com The basic design of the chromecast is that your phone or tablet becomes your media hub controlling device. Looking up content by typing the name of a title is very tedious using a remote and onscreen keyboard. A mobile phone makes this navigation a much more pleasant experience, and once you have found the content you can just click the button to send it to your tv. The chromecast takes the feed that your phone requests and downloads it for itself, leaving your phone free to still be used for other tasks including queuing up what you want to play next. The downside for some is that the chromecast is not a stand-alone device. If you don't have a phone or tablet to use with it, it does nothing by itself. Amazon has forked android to make their own amazon-branded version. They have currently shown no interest in supporting items like the chromecast, opting instead to focus on supporting only their own amazon branded ecosystem (fire tv).
