Any external mic would work as long as you can get an adapter for it. What I do, which may feel like a lot more work but really isn’t, is I take a lavelier mic and connect it to my iPhone and record it separately. That way you can move freely. And then in editing just match up the audio to the video. Pretty simple.

This list is not 100% complete, but the following mics are supported: All Rode VideoMic models, Sennheiser MKE 440, Sennheiser MKE 400, Countryman Lapel (MEMWF05BD2-R), Sound Professionals SP-TFB-2, Opteka VM-100 Video Condenser Shotgun Microphone, Sony ECMCS3 Clip style Omnidirectional Stereo Microphone, Shure VP83 LensHopper Condenser Microphone, and generally any lavalier microphone is supported. Note that you will also want to get the GoPro Mic Adapter to bridge the external mic to the GoPro.
