• You can hold and shoot just fine. Mounting does add a bit more security but I’ve recorded video and taken photos free-hand without issues.

• Yes, you can use the HERO9 Black as a regular handheld camera. Plus, with the stabilization features available in the HERO9 Black, your handheld shots can look very smooth even though the camera is not mounted to anything.
