What you’re referring to underneath is the mulch plug that comes with the mower. On this 2-in-1 model, it’s used when you want the mower to mulch the grass clippings back into the lawn instead of collecting them in the rear bag.
The operator manual identifies the mulch plug as part #10 in the overview diagram on page 4, and the mulching setup steps are covered in Section 4.4 on page 9.
If you decide not to use either the bagger or the mulch plug, the mower can still be operated with rear discharge, where the grass clippings exit below the rear cover while mowing.
