“My ceilings are only 81" from floor. Can this microwave/fan be attached to the ceiling and the back wall, with no cabinets overhead? Doing so would leave 28 inches below the microwave to the top of the range (which is the Haier 24" gas range 36" tall).”

Hello Diane - thank you for your interest in the over-the-range microwave HMV1472BHS; we are happy to help! This model cannot be attached to the ceiling, since it needs to be secured through a cabinet. The height between the microwave and cooking surface is almost double what is normal. It makes the microwave very difficult to access, and the vent fan would not perform as well. We are glad you checked! Olga
