“What does the top of the AC unit look like? I ask this question bc my current AC has open air vents which is bad design when trees are above the unit. Leaves and debris collect there. I'm open to any suggestions about avoiding that problem in future.”

Thank you for your question! All Haier window AC units have vents on the top as this is needed because of the condenser and the hot air that is created as the unit operates. Without those vents, the unit would overheat and become damaged. When it comes to cleaning you can use a vacuum to remove the debris from the vents, or maybe consider getting a portable AC unit. Portable AC units are indoor units and the exhaust hose simply attaches to the window kit.
