I used a 3.5mm to RCA cable to connect the projector to the subwoofer. Initially it only played sound through the subwoofer. I went into the projectors settings, and set the sound to come out of the headphone jack AND speakers. Dialogue comes through the speakers and bass through the subwoofer. Sounds great. Nice little 2.1 system until I can get a full surround setup.

Your subwoofer requires an amplifier that supports the connection of the subwoofer so the proper power and frequencies are provided. The Hisense unit allows optical digital audio out (into an amplifier) and HDMI audio out via HDMI ARC on port 2 (into an amplifier). The small jack you are referring to is for analog audio out only into an amplifier. Your subwoofer then connects to the amplifier subwoofer port.
