• Cool water, there is a heating element that will make it warm.

• I just use cool tap water and it works fine for both warm and cool. There is a heating element that will warm the water, I would stick to the cool tap water.

• I would. The warming feature didn't impress me. I would use warm water. Otherwise the humidifier was impressive in the kind of mist it produces.
