I believe this heater was designated Energy Smart because it incorporates programmable features, like a thermostat and a timer, and the display includes an indicator of current usage (Standby, Lo (750watts) and Hi (1500 watts)). In short, it helps the USER to be smart about energy use.

The EnergySmart® thermostat will automatically select the appropriate power level to best accommodate your Desired Temperature.
