No. The adapter is very odd to me and the instructions took some interpretation. Basically for the adapter to work you will have to get to the air handler. And the air handler needs to have a power source for the “c” wire. (My unit for exaplme doesn’t use a board with marked “r,c,w,g,y” terminals. And I found it much easier to just install a new thermostat wire with 5 leads). The adapter allows you to use your existing 4 wire thermostat wiring, it just changes how they are used to make sure the thermostat itself has power.

It was simply coiled around the other wires in the cable. I had to remove the plate on my furnace covering the main electronics board and attach the extra wire to the “C” terminal and then attach the same wire to the power terminal on my thermostat as shown in the instructions. All worked fine. I would suggest first pulling the face off your existing thermostat and checking the cable attached to it to see if you don’t already have the extra needed wire in your cable even though your current thermostat may not require it. You may even have to pull a bit of cable out of the wall to check to see if the extra wire has been trimmed back. The thermostat does come with a special adapter unit that it says can be used if there is truly no “C” wire present, but I have no experience with it.
