Thank you for your inquiry. There are a lot of factors governing this. It depends on the size of the family room and the location of the air purifier in the room. It also depends on how many sources of contamination or outside air are coming in from the other room, as well as the size of that room. We would advise placing the unit closer to the entrance to the other room.
