Yes, you might have a problem with long shag carpet. I know I have longer nap rugs in my bathroom, so I lift the sweeper up a little while I push it back and forth. Sorry about that.

It sounds like the pile of the carpet may be causing the brushes to stop spinning. For thicker pile carpeting we like to recommend models with a manual height adjustment.
