Thank you for your question! You only have to clean it out as needed, such as if there is a clog in the nozzle or something caught in your brushroll. However, you do not have to clean the brush on a use by use basis, just in a clog or stoppage scenario. Thanks, Joseph - The Hoover Team

This one does fairly well and we only needed to clean it out about once every year. I have several long haired dogs and that is actually very good performance for a vacuum.
