The machine uses suction to remove the dirty water when you use it for its intended purpose, so I suppose yes, it does vacuum. However this is not a vacuum cleaner, so it you just need to vacuum the carpet, use a regular vacuum cleaner. Shampooers like this, have to always be used WITH water. Their filters are made to filter water .

It is for carpet washing only. Not dry pick-up.
