The dirt canister detaches easily with a clip near the top handle. The bottom of canister has a hinge lid to empty however, if you truly are using this for catching pet hair the fastest/easiest way to empty is to twist/ unscrew top of canister. Top of canister also holds dust filter which [left uncleaned] if clogged Will eventually keep machine from starting. Clean filter occasionally and reliability is impressive.
