Hi Jack, apologies for what you're experiencing. I've found that the functionality of HDMI adapters can be hit and miss. Typically, the package or listing will indicate "compatible with Chromebook". If you've opened "settings" and then "displays" and the Chromebook is unable to detect the external monitor, please reach out to Support.HP.com for assistance, or call 800-474-6836.
