Yes, it is, however I would HIGHLY recommend getting a Solid State Hard drive to swap out with the current one to allow this laptop to run to it's full potential. They throw these garbage 5400rpm antiquated drives into budget notebooks for cost savings, when Solid state drives are literally hundreds of times faster and have no moving parts (safer for accidental drops). Solid state drives start around $60 on amazon, are relatively easy to swap out, and then you may use the current 1TB hard drive as an external backup, which I love. All other aspects of this laptop are quick and great for the price and is a good laptop for work and casual computing. If your university student will be using resource intensive software on this computer such as multimedia editing, Adobe, and CAD then you may want to upgrade the RAM(memory) or look for a more powerful laptop suited for those purposes. For casual work and computing it is great.
