I'm not sure of "any" surface but it works fine on a mouse pad, book, wooden desk, plastic table and newspaper.

It is an optical mouse. Probably would not work well on a slick shiny surface like a glass tabletop, but in that case just put a sheet of plain paper down. That has enough texture that it works fine.

I use my ThinkPad mostly while in bed. 
This mouse works on the bedsheets and even on my skin.
I have one that works even on glass but its bulky with 2 extra buttons. This one is small, plug n play, works accurately and has a sorage space for usb in the battery compartment for traveling.

Mine has worked on any reasonably flat smooth surface. Even worked on the arm of my leather recliner.

It works on both light and dark surface. I haven't tried it on glass but it may have some issues there IMO.

Almost. I've used it on smooth book covers. Magazines. My leather couch surface and even on my hand when I just need to click for the next page or slide of a presentation.
