Can you use HP 564 cartridge in HP photosmart plus printers? Can you use a HP 564 cartridge in HP photosmart plus? I ordered the 564 and it is too narrow. The tag that came with the machine said to order replacement 564/564XL cartridges, I thought both would fit, but as I said, the 564 was too narrow. Should I just order the 564XL for both black and color?

You can use either the 564 or the 564xl. The xl is a better value generally. The slot for the cartridge is bigger, yes. You need to center it with the slot in the back and it will seat itself. You may also be trying to put a photo cartridge in the black slot. They are narrower. Hope this helps.

If the owner's manual is telling you to use the HP564 or HP564XL either will work. The printers are shipped with just the regular size cartridge (HP564 for example) It isn't too narrow -- follow the directions on the cartridge carriage for installing your ink cartridges.

Both should fit. You just need to line it up better. The XL are only good if you print at least once a week, they tend to dry up otherwise and cause problems for your printer.

I made the same mistake. I think the HP Photosmart Plus needs the XL. It is wider and fits perfectly

I made the same mistake with the black cartridge. The 564 XL only goes on the right hand side of the slots for the cartridges. The 564 XL is for regular black ink such as letters. The 564 is for photos. There is a difference in the ink. And yes the 564 XL is wider since I suppose more people do regular printing then printing photos. I hope this helps.

The space is probably set up to hold the wider XL cartridge, but the regular 564 cartridge fits and will work. Just make sure that when you install it that it clicks into place.
