In theory the xl is double the capacity. Probably depends on how much ink you are laying down on the pages.

What I have found is that at some point I get an error message saying something like "NOT HP AUTHORIZED RETURN TO PLACE OF PURCHASE". This message seems to come up about the time of regular size would run out of ink. Well you can't return it because you've used it for a few months. If in fact it's not an HP Product then why would it not tell you that when you first install it. So I myself have decided to stop buying the XL it just gets me too upset when I get that error message. Also after that error message your print does not print correctly. In the past when a printer is out of ink it just shoots out a blank page. The XL just prints your page with not all the letters in a few of the words fully printed. That could be a sign of the cartridge being out of ink or low.
