• If you are talking about "HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One series" printer, yes both standard 901 and 901XL will fit into your printer. If you have HP ENVY 4500 printer, you need 61 series ink.

• Yes the xl is really the better size of ink for blk. I also use the HP Printer 4500 and I have used this cart. several times without any incidents.
