• No, it won't. Older printers would do this, but the HP found they could force you to buy more color cartridges by removing this feature.

• Good question. The printer needs to have all cartridges with ink to be able to print with the black cartridges. If you have color cartridges, but no black ink, the printer will mix the 3 colors to make black. If you only have black ink and any one of the colors are empty, it will not print. I hope this helps.

• No. Sadly, it requires you to have at least the yellow filled. From what I've heard, the printer uses yellow even if you only use "black only" mode.

• Yes it does but not for long, but then the black begins to deplete. You would want to replace your cartridges soon so that your print heads don't get clogged.

• I think so. When I recently ran out of magenta, I was able to print in black. Each time I hit "Print" there was an alert that I was out of color ink. I needed to confirm that I wanted black as a substitute.

• I am not sure if the printer will print with empty color cartridges but when I notice that my color inks are about to run out, I adjust the setting on my printer to print "black only" and it will continue to print.

• It will print with just black if your color is empty that’s why I love this printer. I have one so does my son and I also have the one before this one. Great product Hp listened to what we wanted
