“Is there an easier way to wake up this computer if I have the laptop laying on the keyboard? I currently have to pick it up then find the power key and then wait some time for it to wake up. It doesn't wake up with just my mouse or clicking the keyboard.”

I am sorry that your computer is having difficulty with restarting out of either sleep mode or hibernate. One option would be within the Power Management settings to change to sleep mode rather than hibernate. Additionally, when this laptop is open past a certain angle, the keyboard and touchpad are disabled: This is to prevent accidental cursor movement or typing while in tablet mode. HP Support and Geek Squad can also look into the wake issue for you. These are some solid options.
