How does this compare to the office inkjet 5740? null

I have both. My 6+ year-old OfficeJet 5740 finally stopped being useful due to paper handling issues. The Envy 7858 looks like almost the same printer! There are a few software differences, and it takes different ink cartridges, but the outward appearance and general function are the same. I've only had it for a few weeks now, but I hope it lasts as long as my old OfficeJet did. See more info in my recent review.

The Envy 7858 prints 3 pages faster per minute than the Officejet 5740. The capacity of the auto document feeder on the 5740 is 25 pages and the 7858 has a 35-page auto document feeder. The 7858 uses the 64 black and tri-color inks and the 5740 uses the 62 black and tri-color inks.
