My printer is an HP Desk jet 3050, several years old. It connected fine to the HP Envy PC, and I was able to download the printer software from the HP website, to print the same as before. No new cables or new software were needed, just the printer installation software that came with the printer originally. All in all, the updated software downloaded from the HP website was probably better than the original installation software disc, since it included all the printer updates.

Remember, you must install the printer to the PC and get updates from the owner of the printer, such as Epson, HP, etc. Once installed, the printer will show "ready" or "idle" on the printer. Most likely you will not have to change settings on the printer.
