Think of it as a Flash drive that is permanently mounted inside the computer instead of being plugged into a USB port. It replaces the electro-mechanical hard drives that store the information (Operating system, you programs and data) using magnetic media. They are much faster because there are no physical discs to spin or heads to move to read/write from/to the drive. Your machine will boot MUCH faster and anything involving the disk will be much faster.
