I first tried a USB-C hub that I bought for the purpose, but the USB-C input doesn't recognize the additional monitor. I ended up getting a VGA plug, even though the monitor also has HDMI, and it works with horrible resolution. Doesn't seem like this unit should be advertised on this forum as being capable of multiple monitors.

Be sure that the adapter you are using states that it is specifically for vga out (from the computer) to hdmi in (monitor).

Thank you for the question. You'll get better results connecting via USB Type-C. Get an HDMI to USB Type C adapter or USB-C hub that has an HDMI port.
