Yeah, more and more new laptops are eliminating optical drives. More people are relying on downloading from the internet and streaming video to take its place.. Dont know if the industry is trying to force us that way or newer consumers like it... No drive does make the package lighter and thinner. If you need an optical drive, there are several reasonably priced ones on the market.

In fact, we are starting to see the beginning of the phasing out of CD/DVD drives in computer. Many software titles are starting to move to diskless packaging. They simply provide you with a key/validation code and then an address for downloading the software. A lot of newer movies coming out, especially the blu[-ray versions, include digital codes for downloading and/or streaming the movies. Like the floppy drive before it, expect the optical drive to go the way of the Dodo.

Additionally, online downloading of programs and Cloud storage are becoming popular alternatives to disks. You can purchases an external CD/DVD optical drive for under $30 for those occasions when one is needed.
