The printer can also generate it's own Wi-Fi network - it won't act as an access point for your network but it will generate it's own wireless network so that machines can connect even without a router present. It may be obvious, but if you connect to the printers network you don't have internet access, just access to the printer. This means if your laptop or PC has Wi-Fi capability it can connect to the printer and print regardless of whether you have a wireless router or not.
